After reading this you should never call Nihari bad. Ah, the wonderful taste of Nihari!

I've got a runny nose and I'm sneezing my eyeballs out. And, I have to come to work. The problem is, this isn't bad enough for me to call in sick. Almost everyone in my family's got a cold. In fact, I think this is an extended problem throughout Hyderabad. I've been hearing a lot of cases of colds, conjunctivitis, and the worse dengue.

I guess it has to do with the season. Keep safe people and remember to wash your hands regularly. (and use soap too!)

The weekend was fine. Hyderabad's been having some really nice weather off late. It rained all night yesterday. Things like that are becoming legendary in the city. My folks always tell me how it used to rain for days back when they were kids. What could have changed it? Is this the most direct effect of global warming that we're seeing. Or is it because of the rapid growth that Hyderabad is seeing with concrete structures propping up all over the place?

I hope the Ganesh festival passes off smoothly. They're calling in cops from the neighboring towns for extra security. This is also Ramazan time in Hyderabad. We're a food crazy city. We love to eat. And what's become synonymous with this time is Haleem. I am tempted to taste it at all the different hotels, but I can't because I'm on a lousy diet :(

Word of caution though. I've heard a lot of negative stuff about the hygiene standards at these Haleem joints. When I say hygiene, I don't mean Geneva, Switzerland standards. It's bad even by Hyderabadi standards. And when something is that bad, it's worth being careful about. Apparently, the huge deghs (pots in which haleem is cooked) aren't cleaned properly. And when you clean them using water, you can't drain the water. You can only remove it using a sponge. This means that inevitably, some water remains in the degh. That's disgusting!

Anyhow, I don't this post is going to discourage you from eating 'hotel ki haleem' anyway. (How else would you be a true Hyderabadi) All I can say is, 'Enjoy!' And I hope your insides don't feel like they need to take a vacation.

Yesterday Evening as I was returning home from work in our cab, something really strange happened. Our cab driver was possessed by Michael Schumacher's spirit. Now he's racing down the road at scandalous speeds and before you can say 'Anta scene ledu' a dog comes smack in front of our cab. We hit the dog and hear it howling. We're all pretty worried now. We just killed a dog. What the hell was this cab guy thinking?

Since I was sitting in the rear seat, I looked back and noticed (to my relief) the dog running away from the road. And for good measure. It almost bit the dust. That was a relief. But if you think the worst isn't over yet, here's the killer. I turn around and tell the cab guy to be careful. Today it's a dog. Tomorrow it could be a Human Being. He says, and I quote 'Mai horn mara saab'

Now my jaw drops to the ground. This guy expects the dog to understand road etiquettes and move away when he toots his horn. Speaking of road etiquette, I think the cabby and the dog have something in common here. Total lack of road sense. Only one of them can be excused.

Anyhow, these cab guys are the new menace. I think they're working full force to dethrone our erstwhile auto wallas. God help the poor pedestrian who happens to come in their way. So the next time you're crossing the road, please be sure that there isn't a cab within a kilometer radius. And since that's become impossible, don't cross the road unless your life depends on it.

There are a lot of places that I like to go to when I'm in the mood for a picnic. I've listed a few of them, in no particular order.

  • Himayath Sagar and/or Gandipet
  • Necklace Road
  • Coffee Day at Jubilee Hills (the one near Apollo Hospital)
  • HavMor
  • Midland Cafe (my local chai place)

What are your favorite places?

If you haven't eaten biryani yet, then you shouldn't be reading this blog. Of course your exempted if your vegetarian. Because the subject here is non-veg biryani. Anyhow, this post isn't about biryani at all. It's about trying something different unique.

Arabic food has come to Hyderabad in a big way. And I'm willing to bet that you've had your share of Arabic food too. Anyhow, here's another thing to try. Turkish Food. Yep, that's right. So the good folks from Istanbul thought that Hyderabad may be a good place to set up a Turkish Restaurant.

The name is Mediterranean. The food is Turkish. And, the verdict is, 'Pretty Good'

It's different. The food may seem a bit bland but it seems true to its claim. Unlike Siddiqui Kabab Center (which is stone's throw away incidentally), which sells bagara khana in the name of Arabic Kabsa. And I hate them for that.

So, back to the post. Please try out this restaurant and let me know. In case you've eaten here already, I'd still love to hear from you. This location is the famous eating triangle at Toli Chowki (a little ahead of Mehdipatnam). Once you're there you can't miss it.

I don't know if I should be feeling sad, angry, or just say it was bound to happen. Sloppy work has become the hallmark of whoever is in charge. I just hope these guys can be more tempered and respect rules as they carry on with the construction work. Talking about flyovers, have you noticed that the roads are getting messier. I mean, you cant take a decent drive down Jubilee Hills without having to navigate a few very dangerous pot holes. Who's looking after the roads any way.

Open man hole covers are another threat. Too many people have died or almost died for us to not do something about this. I guess its because of the monsoon. But if you're going to tout Hyderabad as the next Singapore and all that jazz, then this isn't the way to go.

Is there something we can do to change this? Activism maybe? Or citizen and locality groups. Small bands of people from localities coming together to address their civic issues. Sadly, that's what municipalities are supposed to be doing. But like everything else, I think things are moving in the direction of self managed colonies and away from dependence on the government and municipal staff.

Which brings me to another interesting question. Do we really need a government? I mean their main job is to take care of the people and solve their problems. But these guys seem to be doing the opposite. How about city councils, where the educated city folk come forward and deal with the problems of the city as one collective brain. What do you think?

Its simple, write about the happenings in and around Hyderabad. It will include News and General Information about Hyd and a chance to voice your views (in the comments section) Since Hyd is in the news, for reasons good and bad, I'm sure there'll be lots to write about.
